From the start of April 2025, Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) and Heavy Goods Vehicle Road User Levy will rise in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI), writes Peter Brown.
The hike will affect all HGVs over 12 tonnes gross vehicle weight (GVW), with operators facing a £300 fine and potential vehicle prohibition if they don’t comply.
The RPI measures inflation by tracking the average change in the cost of goods and services over time.
Changes to VED means a Euro 6 truck over 38 tonnes GVW rises by £20.74 to £596.74.
The HGV Road User Levy will also rise although its official figure is yet to be published.
The HGV levy was suspended starting August 2020, and this suspension remained in effect until July 31, 2023. The suspension was implemented to support the haulage industry, which was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
