M8 Bridge Strike Causes Chaos

A lorry carrying a heavy load collided with a bridge over the M8 motorway near junction 27 in Renfrew on Wednesday 4 June, causing major traffic disruption and delays, writes Peter Brown.

The incident led to the closure of the M8 westbound carriageway to allow the debris to be cleared and for bridge safety inspections. The bridge strike resulted in the lorry shedding its load onto the motorway.

While the motorway has reopened, Arkleston Road, which crosses over the affected section of the M8, remains closed and is expected to stay shut for the foreseeable future as safety assessments and repairs continue.

Police Scotland issued an appeal for information, urging witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward. Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2011 from June 4, 2025.
