Paying To Be Green

The inaugural Decarbonisation Summit held by Freight Carbon Zero in Liverpool included a panel session looking at the thorny problem of who will pay for decarbonisation of the road freight transport industry. Gordon Roberts reports.

AT THE Scottish Clean Air Roadshow in Edinburgh Andy Salter launched Freight Carbon Zero, a website dedicated to driving the journey to decarbonisation. In his capacity as the managing director of DVV Media International, he explained to delegates that there are challenges and issues road transport need to overcome to reach carbon zero vehicles.
“We have a society that’s more than 80% reliant on diesel trucks to have its goods delivered,” he said, “and we can’t just walk away from that overnight or expect that we’re going to, by the click of our fingers, find a new solution.”
The key is finding viable routes from manufacturing net-zero vehicles to operating them, he explained, and one route is to place ownership of the asset with the OEM.
