The Family Ties

Many hauliers are family businesses and Earl Transport is no different. Peter Hughes and his daughter Rhian talk to Lucy Radley about bringing on the next generation and the succession plan.
AS JOURNALISTS, we spend a lot of time exploring what’s modern in the world of transport. So much so, in fact, it’s easy to wonder how the industry ever turned a profit without an app for most things and a gadget for the rest.
It’s refreshing, therefore, to sit down with a man who does things the old way, and his daughter who appreciates that enough not to destroy it. Time to meet Peter Hughes and Rhian Hughes-Hodgkinson of Accrington’s Earl Transport.
“We started in 1978 with just a rigid and an artic, in Earl Street, Clayton-le Moors,” Peter Hughes told Transport News. “An uncle of mine drove the rigid, and I drove the artic.”
