Keeping Your Cool

UNREMITTING pressure to cut emissions and the demise of cheap red diesel as a fuel for fridge engines are prompting temperature-controlled trailer operators to investigate alternative sources of power. One option is to go electric, and it is an approach being catered for by Gray & Adams among others.
The Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire trailer builder has created a dual-temperature 13.6m refrigerated trailer equipped with Carrier Transicold’s all-electric Vector eCool refrigeration system.
It converts the kinetic energy generated by the axles and brakes on a trailer, which would otherwise go to waste, into electricity which is then stored in a battery pack and used to power the fridge unit. This loop creates a fully autonomous system that produces no direct carbon dioxide or particulate emissions, points out Gray & Adams.
