That Sinking Feeling: The State of Scotland’s West Coast Ferries

Carol Millett investigates the impact of Scotland’s creaking ferry service on hauliers delivering to the Western Isles.

ARRAN HAULAGE Services recently had one of its trailers emblazoned with the missive: “Attention! In spite of CalMac and Transport Scotland’s best efforts, the Isle of Arran is open for business.”
On the day the trailer was due to be painted in its controversial livery, director Rachel Armitage told Transport News: “It would have been done earlier today, but the sign writers were delayed after the ferry was cancelled.”
And therein lies the problem that prompted the new livery – repeated delays to CalMac’s ferry services which has hauliers tearing their hair out, not only on Arran but across the west coast and the Western Isles of Scotland,.
