A Safe Pair Of Hands

With the Ward Bros (Malton) ‘40 year’ anniversary on the horizon, Lucy Radley speaks to Steve Ward about how the business started, dispelling myths and why the challenge is to make the business reliable for its workers.

BASED IN Middlesbrough, Ward Bros (Malton) has its roots in the Yorkshire Wolds. Started by brothers Steven and David Ward back in 1986 as a workshop based on their father’s farm, by the time it relocated to its current site in 2009 it had morphed into a classic general haulier with over 30 vehicles working from two sites.
MD Steve Ward was happy to fly under the radar, taking what opportunities came his way without any kind of fanfare or fuss, yet by the end of 2011 Ward Bros would have doubled in size, securing its place as one of Teesside’s larger independent players.
“I bought this yard in 2004,” he explained. Steve’s the younger of the two brothers; David sticks to the workshop.
