Working Flat Out

Mick Slater started out on traction and moved to flatbeds. Operating out of Carlisle, he explains to Lucy Radley how the business has evolved.
IT’S NOT easy to make money out of general haulage on flatbeds, but despite being very fond of a highly spec’d wagon, Mick Slater is proof that the most important bit is having the right contacts.
Managing director of Carlisle based MJ Slater Haulage Ltd since 2005, a sole trader since 1988, this man has set himself up just nicely with options for the future. With nine trucks of his own on the road currently, but a fleet of around 20 at his fingertips and more in the wings, we were curious to find out more.
“We’ve got a hardcore of subcontractors that work with us, pulling our trailers, and a trustworthy haulier base as well,” he explained.
