It’s Electric Ted!

Operators choosing a battery electric commercial vehicle as a last mile delivery solution require planning and patience. Kevin Swallow visited J&M Murdoch to see if its new electric truck can pay its way. Images: Tom Cunningham.

MENTION battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to a truck operator and the response is often muted. Questions about range, payload and, of course, cost are to be expected, but also what type of work might it be able to cope with.
And it’s that latter point about ‘the job’ that is pivotal in answering the first three questions.
Diesel remains the fuel of choice, but operators are now beginning to find work where using an alternative to fossil fuel doesn’t change the way the job is done.
