Belgium-based Sitra Group has acquired Abbey Logistics for an undisclosed sum, in a move which sees a major consolidation of the food logistics sector, writes Carol Millett.

Sitra Group employs approximately 1,150 people across 11 countries, including the UK, and operates a fleet of 700 owned trucks and over 2,000 trailers and containers, including liquid and powder food tankers.

The purchase of Abbey Logistics Group, which boasts an annual turnover of £75m and has four sites in Scotland, sees Sitra Group add nearly 600 staff and a fleet of 325 trucks and 550 trailers to its operations.

Sitra Group has pledged that Abbey will continue to operate under its own name and livery. An Abbey Logistics spokesperson told Transport News that the company has no plans to make any staff redundant or to close any depots.
